Both the coloration and patterns of an individual parrotfish can change repeatedly, making taxonomic classification something of a nightmare. In most areas of the world the males sport bright, electric colors, while the females tend toward more drab browns, greens, and grays. However, the situation is completely reversed in Mediterranean waters. And if that’s not confusing enough, some parrotfish will also change gender during their lifetime!
